Thinking of starting a small local newsletter to make real cash — want honest takes

i’ve been poking around for a side thing that doesn’t involve flipping stuff, or pretending to be a bot farm. the idea i'm playing with is a small, hyper-local weekly newsletter that curates the best local jobs, deals, and events for one city or niche, then monetizes it with cheap sponsor spots and classifieds.

i haven’t launched anything yet, just been reading, taking notes, and watching how others built small lists and turned them into a few hundred or even a couple thousand a month. from what i can tell, it actually works if you go all in for a few months and keep it consistent. i’m not expecting to get rich, just want something simple that makes steady cash.

the idea
a one-page weekly email with around 10 useful local items (jobs, events, small business promos) plus a short personal note at the top. you can sell a sponsor slot for $40–$80 and classifieds for $15–$30.

why it might work
• local businesses are always looking for low-cost exposure
• people are tired of scrolling through messy facebook groups
• very low overhead, no product, no shady stuff, just curation and consistency

how i’d launch it (fast and cheap)
• pick one city and topic (like “lisbon tech gigs” or “toronto weekend deals”)
• use substack or mailer lite for emails, notion or carrd for a simple public page
• gather 10–15 solid local finds manually from groups and listings
• send out the first issue on friday with a short intro, top picks, and a classifieds section

how i’d get the first readers
• post a short value list in local online groups saying “i’ll keep doing this weekly if people like it”
• ask anyone who joins to share it with one friend
• maybe drop it in local community chats if it fits naturally

how to monetize
• top sponsor spot for $49 as a beta offer, raise later once there’s proof
• classifieds for small listings at $15–$25
• later, offer small bundle deals if demand grows

time needed
around 3–4 hours a week for finding content and contacting potential sponsors. simple to run on the side.

things i’m not sure about
• is this already overdone or still under the radar in most cities
• would small businesses actually pay for it or want to see numbers first
• how hard is it to keep the content fresh every week
• what’s the right way to get the first 100 legit subscribers fast

a rough sample issue layout
Subject: [city] quick picks – best jobs, events & local deals this week

short intro about the week or something personal
top 7 local items with one-line descriptions
small classifieds section for paid listings
note about how to submit or sponsor next week’s issue

quick sponsor message draft
hey, i’m starting a local email digest for [city]. it goes out weekly to locals who actually read it. testing sponsor spots at $49 for the top section. want to try one next week?

Some question for you !
• does this sound like something that could still work in 2025 or am i late
• anyone here tried something similar and learned what not to do
• what kind of niches work best for this type of thing
• how would you grow it fast without burning your rep or spamming

i’m just looking for an honest read from people who’ve built real income streams before. i don’t want to chase shiny stuff or nonsense, just a small project that pays for itself and scales slowly if i stay on it. any thoughts, advice, or reality checks welcome.
